The goal in reading It Ain't So Awful Falafel is for students to put themselves in someone else's shoes in order to experience what that person's culture and learn to see the beauty in doing things a little differently than what students may be used to. I want students to develop an appreciation for other cultures, and literature is a fantastic way to do so.
To facilitate this, I would like to have class discussions regarding the cultural differences pointed out in the story (which is about an Iranian girl who moves to California). By handing out this worksheet to students before beginning the book, students will be encouraged to write down the differences that they hear so that we can discuss them as a class at the end of the chapter.
The handout is as follows:
As we read It Ain't So Awful Falafel throughout the unit, write down anything that you hear that sounds like an example of a cultural difference. We will discuss what you've written at the end of each chapter.
