My hope is that through this writing assignment, students will come to have a greater understanding of what life may be like for someone who lives in a different country, eats different food, celebrates different holidays, has different hobbies, and perhaps has a different religion than what you are used to.
This assignment will be assigned when students pick out their country to research. They will be given multiple class days to research and write their entries.
After they have collected a significant amount of research (using the "country research" handout), students will begin working on their diary entries.
Part One: [Teacher note: instruct students to start out organizing their ‘make believe person’s’ life into a ‘web’. Give them a pre-made ‘web sheet’ in order to do this. Tell them to include the name of their city, their class (lower, middle, upper), what kind of house they live in, what kind of neighborhood they live in. what school they go to, family, and friends. Also include current events in their country. Instruct students to use their web organizer when they write their diary entries as the information they put into their web organizer will provide them with details to include in their diaries.]
You have already chosen your country to research. Using what you learned about your country, I would like for you to create a ‘make believe’ person living in the country you have researched. I would like for you to be realistic when you do this. Using the web organizer provided, give your person a name and include their city, class, type of house, type of neighborhood, school, family, friends, and current events that may affect them.

Using the web organizer, contruct 5, one page diary entries for your imaginary person. [Since the goal of the assignment is to help the students have a deeper understanding of what life is like for a person living in their country, it is important that they incorporate unique information about their country.]
Since this project will be presented to the class, you must find a way in which to present it. A few examples are: putting your entries on a poster, presenting your entries like a book, or making your own website (or 'blog') using your entries. You will be given points for creatively presenting your project.
This assignment is a part of a unit about culture. It is important that the students make their diary entry about a 7th grader living in their SPECIFIC country. If students need help with this, encourage them to talk about major events that have recently taken place in their country, political leaders, locations, etc.
